Oxford Dictionary of Word Origins (Oxford Quick Reference) 2nd Edition

I bought this book for a friend of mine who, like me, loves words. We live ~1800 miles apart, so playing Scrabble is not an option (except on line). I own a similar book & like just thumbing thru it to find not just words, but their origins. Pretty boring, you might be thinking 🤔, but if you enjoy word games or simply learning, you'll enjoy this book!

It is tough striking a balance between thoroughness and being easily understood by all especially when dealing with derivations. It is easy to leave one either wanting more or swamped in more words needing to be cleared up. Often a good derivation can make all the difference to my students getting a clear concept of a word. Oxford does a oretty good job here. I would like to see this book expanded with more entries.

I own an older version and a friend of mine enjoyed it so much I bought 3 of Oxfords books to enjoy with him. Remember Ad Libs when you were a kid? These are much more fun to share, especially on long car rides.

This is a great reference book. Even if you're just curious about a word, you might addicted to this book.

Just what every word junkie needs.

Thats the trouble with this book , at lot of it is plain wrong , and the jokey , dumbed down text is awful , avoid if you have the least interest in the origin of words.

Very interesting information about word origins. But print ever so small as there are two columns, I think the layout could have been better.

I love this book!Anyone has any interest in language would or should enjoy it.The origins of french,latin and 'roots' of words make you look at english from a slight angle and have better understanding of it.

Lots of words not there that you’d think would be. Disappointed
