Whales: The Gentle Giants

My grandson LOVED this book. He has been into whales since his recent trip to the aquarium!

My 6 year old daughter is very much into whales right now and I got her a selection of books on whales for Christmas.We both love the illustrations, and the readability is very good.HOWEVER...This book was written in 1989 and is so problematic that I made her stop reading a little over halfway through.The information is outdated and is conflicts with current texts about whales.(ie Orcas like being in captivity, enjoy doing tricks, love being petted, are very tame...)My daughter and I decided to send an email to the publisher describing the errors and requesting an update be made or the book being discontinued.I'm thrilled to report that we did get several responses as the customer service department took prompt action sending our request up through their supervisors all the way to the chief editor. She agreed wholeheartedly that changes were needed and should be made.The editor has placed the book under review of their scientific accuracy department and they are making arrangements with the estate of the original author (Joyce Milton who has sadly passed away) about making the necessary changes to her original text.TL;DRThe information in this book is outdated and you should instead look for the updated version (probably not available until late 2022 I'm guessing) or buy a different book altogether.

She got introduced to whales by her 1st grade teacher and she wanted to know more about them. She read this book and was so proud of her increased knowledge about whales.

Well-presented facts that naturally lead a young reader to want to learn more about whales, and I admit to learning a lot about them myself. Clear and colorful illustrations, not at all scary, that depict the text and engage the imagination. Highly recommend.

I think it is a good book. My six year old son can read it independently. In the "Step into Reading" series I tend to like the biographies a little better than the science books. The science books don't provide quite enough information.

I recommend all the step into reading books. They keep even the most reluctant readers attention.

I read to my son who loves animals. Great informational text. I Would recommend for a first or second grader.

Very nicely written with plenty off facts about whales. My Four and a half year old son just loves this book and has become very fond of whales. Has Created a lot of curiosity for him about whales. Must buy!

Kindle版だと横にして読むようになります。特に不便はないですが、辞書機能が使えません。（なくても大丈夫ですが・・・）クジラの種類等知らない単語が多めですが、これらを調べることによって単語と知識、両方の勉強になると思います。多読中はあまり単語を調べないようにしていますが、この本に関しては調べてもいいかな、と個人的には思いました。ただ、絵がたくさんあるので単語の難易度の高さはカバーできていると思います。クジラの生態をシンプルな英語で学ぶことができて楽しいです。
