Glycerin is popular in beauty products because it is a humectant, meaning it absorbs ambient water, thus it can help seal in moisture and hydrate skin. A safer alternative to the sometimes harsh chemical hydroquinone, Arbutin reduces pigmentation in the skin and has been used as a skin-lightening agent since the 1960s. Currently arbutin is combined with other active ingredients in skin-care regimens to treat dark patches from sun exposure, freckles, liver spots and age spots. The compound glycyrrhizin (or glycyrrhizic acid), found in liquorice, has demonstrated antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory & hepatoprotective properties. Liquorice extract also against atopic dermatitis when applied to skin. Additionally liquorice has also proven itself effective in treating hyperlipidaemia (a high amount of fats in the blood). Liquorice has also demonstrated efficacy in treating inflammation-induced skin hyperpigmentation.
