A welcome improvement over the first book in the series.
Lord Eden has matured after three years as a soldier. He has grown fond of his mentor, Charlie Simpson and his young wife, Ellen. The three have forged a strong friendship. Charlie and Ellen have provided Eden a home away from home. After Charlie is killed in the Battle of Waterloo, Ellen nurses Lord Eden in her home. In their shared grief and close proximity, Eden and Ellen cross the line of friendship. Guilt soon poisons their relationship. Ellen flees to her late husband's family. Eden is desperate to recover the love they shared. All seems lost yet love persists and will not give up.

Not my favorite, but I still liked it!
Different than I expected. From the preview it seemed that the " secret" had to do with the Heroine 's first marriage, but it didn't. That was disappointing but I was happy to read more about Madeline.Knowing the Hero found love was nice!

Web of Love
I found this book tedious, repetitive and boring. I have never given a negative review on books, but this book was truly awful.

One of Balogh's excellent books
Since other reviewers have provided thorough precises of this marvelous book I shall limit my review to a couple of issues. The first is admiration for the depth of the author's exploration of the effects of war on both combatants and their loved ones. This is done seamlessly in the course of a true love story. The other is appreciation for the characters of the H and h. Both Dom and Ellen are people the reader can grow to love and appreciate. This book is a lovely way to spend a rainy Saturday.

Insufferable.
I buy these for my mum who has (had) a very keen mind at 80 years old. Thing is, with every page of this drivel having been read, boom! there goes 500 brain cells. It's that worthless and I'm worried, frankly.

... shade too dramatic before they both realised their mutual love but Mary Balogh carried it
very satisfying ending to the trilogy - all loose ends tied off - relationship between James and Maddie a shade too dramatic before they both realised their mutual love but Mary Balogh carried it off

Great
I cannot get over how much I enjoyed this book. It is the first book I have read from this author and found her writing style so easy and relaxing to read. Loved the era it was set in as I don't know much about this time. The romance was so nice and addictive I kept reaching to this book during the day and evening.

Well written series!
J'adore les livres écrtis par Mary Balogh! Les personnages sont romantiques à souhait et l'intirgue rondement menée. A lire absolument!

Mary Balogh pulls off the impossible...
I'm always looking forward to reissues of Balogh's older title because they are so impossibly hard to get. When I read the synopsis for this one, I was skeptial though: A woman married to a much older man (who she loved nevertheless) and at the same time falling for her husband's young, attractive friend. Husband conveniently dies but the remaining couple feels too guilty to get together. But Mary Balogh again pulls off the impossible: The chararters for the most part are believable and you never loose interest in the story because Balogh takes her time to develop the relationships instead of rushing through everything like other authors do.So, right now I'm looking forward to the next story - Madeleine and James! Here's what the back cover synopsis says:He'd served with her husband on the battlefield - and secretly desired her for years. Yet for Dominic, Lieutenant Lord Eden, Ellen Simpson has remained tantalizingly out of reach - until she is widowed by the war. Suddenly pursued by the dangerously handsome nobleman, Ellen is stunned by the depth of attraction he arouses in her. Soon their friendship flames into something deeper...and as scandal ignites, marriage seems the only solution. But Ellen has a secret - one she can share with no one - that prevents her from fully opening her heart to Dominic. Until he devises his own plan for the ultimate consumption of their passion - and the woman he is determined to ossess at any cost...
