WARNING - NOT IDENTICAL TO ORIGINAL 1959 BOOK
I was so excited to see Adelaide, a great vintage children's book by Tomi Ungerer, back in print. That said, when I just received my copy from Amazon, I saw it had been changed from the 1959 version my daughter had checked out of our local library. While the story is essentially the same, just be forewarned that the wording throughout has been changed in many places. The most notable is the change to the ending:ORIGINAL:The director gave her a signed paper releasing Leon. They were married soon after. Long live the happy couple! Leon and Adelaide had many children. With her fine family and good friends Adelaide was completely happy.NEW VERSION:The director gave her a signed paper and Leon was released. Soon, they were married. Leon and Adelaide had many children - they were the most striking family of kangaroos the world had ever seen! Adelaide was truly happy and realized that her adventures could have only happened with her special set of wings."

A MUST-HAVE
My best friend is 2 weeks away from delivering her baby, a girl she is naming Adelaide. I ran across this book, never heard of it, and bought it for her. It's adorable. I thinkit's a very unique book and unlike any children's book I've ever seen - and I worked in a daycare for many years. It's a book that is meant to inspire independence and confidence in children.IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE ORIGINAL VERSION,THIS IS NOT IT. I know a lot of people are upset that this version of the book has a different ending that the original book. If you are looking for the original, this is not it. However, as someone who had never heard of the book until I searched the name Adelaide - I still enjoy it and find it to have a positive message for kids!

A delightful tale
This charming book tells the tale of a winged kangaroo who leaves home to see the world and finds a life for herself in Paris. Adelaide's story contains themes of friendship, self-sacrifice, the kindness of strangers and the importance of striving for happiness in one's life. Ungerer's childlike drawings are clever and the blue and tan color palette is quite soothing. An endearing read your children will enjoy for years to come.

An Original Charming Children's Classic Book
Adelaide was a favorite of my children as were all Tomi Ungerer's books. I bought for a friend's son and he loves it. The book is charming and original and written in a way that holds a child's interest. I highly recommend it.Unfortunately, the ending has been changed (I don't know by who or why). I wish I had realized this before I bought the book new. I would have tried to find a good used copy.

one of his best and most unique..i love tomi ungerer and believe i have most of his books, if not all, but this is right up there with crichtor...sweet little story and my 5 year old and i have read it numerous times. a keeper.we have some of his not-so-politically correct books too and they are all unique and hold my 5 year old's attention.

Adelaide for Adelaide
Purchased the book for a little girl named Adelaide. Story and illustrations are fine. Nothing special except (for us) the title.

Super Cute Book
This book is absolutely adorable. I was quite pleased to add this to a baby shower gift!

It's okay, but not great.
I ordered this book because my soon-to-be-born granddaughter will be an "Adelaide." The book was cute, but there wasn't really much substance to the story. I understand this is a classic, but wasn't overly impressed. However, I'm sure our Adelaide will enjoy reading a story about a flying kangaroo named Adelaide.

A classic
I collect children's books (and I have two children) and Ungerer's work is right up there with the best (my other favourites are Alois Carigiet, William Steig, M. Sasek, oh there are many others!) 'Adalaide' is stylistically a lot like 'Crictor' - another one of my favourites of his. The new Phaidon edition has a dust jacket like the original printing (the 80s printing didn't have a dust jacket, I think) and the reproduction is superb - well done to them!
