Q: How to choose between this passive model & an active one? Intention is convert unbalanced output from computer to balanced to send to active speakers.

The output from a computer is stereo. You would need the dual model to have 2 channels, left and right. It will work, but I have never had anyone use the product this way.

No, the 1/8” stereo jack is an input not an output.
