For hundreds of years, the Swiss have been among the most active and athletic people in Europe. Since watchmaking is Switzerland's national industry, the country has a long tradition of sporting timepieces that have been designed for an active lifestyle. Created by founder Samuel Friedmann, Calibre timepieces were established in 1992 to bring the Swiss enthusiasm for sports and the outdoors to a world where watches were increasingly becoming an integral part of an active, casual lifestyle.Nineteen-ninety-two was a banner year for Swiss athletes. Marc Rosset won a gold medal in Men's Singles Tennis at the Barcelona Summer Olympics, while Gustav Weder and Donat Acklin won gold for Switzerland at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville in the two-man bobsled competition. This was the same year that another high-caliber Swiss performance began to take shape: Calibre Collection timepieces. The Calibre Collection takes the Swiss sporting tradition, exemplified by Switzerland's 1992 Olympic champions, and updates it for the 21st Century. Calibre timepieces are powered by precision Swiss-made movements and are the definition of a great sports watch. The Calibre vision was inspired by two Swiss traditions: watchmaking excellence and a love of athletic activity. These versatile timepieces are setting new standards for creativity, craftsmanship, and casual style. A Bit More Than Basic With A Strangely Slanted Date Window
Recently I reviewed the Calibre Men's SC-4A1-04-007 Akron Analog Display Quartz Black Watch. I felt it was a basic watch with no frills--no timer, no world time, no stopwatch. It's not a chronograph. It doesn't even have hour markings on the dial. It just tells time and gives the date in good old analog fashion. Overall, I felt that is was not a bad watch--just an ordinary one. I gave it three stars. Now along comes the Calibre Men's SC-5A2-04-007 Akron Analog Display Quartz Two Tone Watch. Comparing the model numbers, it is very apparent that this is the big brother to the watch that I previously reviewed. As such, it has some of the same pros and cons that I mentioned in the previous review. What has changed is the addition of the chronograph with separate hours, minutes and seconds dials, two pushbuttons to control the chronograph and a fancier metal band. (I had to remove three links from the metal band.)From my previous review:The watch has a rotating bezel that surrounds the dial. It makes a satisfying clicking sound as you turn it, but I am not entirely sure why its there. Some folks prefer to own watches with mechanisms made in either Japan or Switzerland. There is a small notation on the dial indicating that this is a Swiss movement. The watch is water resistant to 165 feet (50 M.) Note two things: 1) The watch is water resistant, not waterproof. There's a big difference between the two. 2) 50 meters is not very deep if you are a diver. I would definitely remove this watch prior to going into the water. While the manufacturer states that the watch is, "suitable for swimming and showering," I would be reluctant to do either while wearing it.That was from my previous review. Now a word about the Calibre documentation that comes with the watch. It is nice to have a printed manual with plenty of illustrations. Thank you for that, Calibre. But why in the world do you find it necessary to offer a one-size-fits-all manual with no table of contents? This requires the user to search through the manual comparing the illustrations of every watch included in the manual with the actual watch. That's the only way that a user can identify which section of the instructions apply to which watch. Not very helpful!A final word on this watch. Due to the placement of the chronograph dials, the date has been offset and placed on a 45 degree angle. This makes the date a bit difficult to read. Not a showstopper by any means, but a bit strange to see in a date featured watch.
