The middle is made from mdf, not bamboo. You will eventually spill liquids on it (that's the whole point) and the middle of the tray will stop being smooth.

Deep trays - great size for carrying teapot and several cups. Had trays like this before (to fit into a kitchen design) and the bases were the same wood as the sides and consequently, have worn. The bases on these are made of a waterproof material and can easily be wiped.
