My first Jughead comic
Jughead volume 1 collects the first six issues of the revamped Jughead series, which also features an all-star cast of the inhabitants of Riverdale, so it is not a Jughead ‘solo’ series, per se, but he does take the lead role – mostly. As with the recently revamped Archie series, I have no memory of reading Archie Comics as a child, though I had glanced through some of their comics back in the day, but I was more of a superhero reader, and always preferred book-length continuing stories, in the Marvelous Marvel Manner. Well, the world turns, and here we are with the world of Archie now being presented in just such a manner, and by Marvel writers and artists too.Imagine my surprise when I saw Doreen Green (a.k.a. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) at Riverdale High on page three (not that sort of page three), disguised as Betty; then I checked the credits, and this entire book is illustrated by Erica Henderson (artist of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl); howcome they never mentioned this over there? I’d have been here a year or two sooner. Anyway, it really was Betty, but the all New All Different Betty.Imagine my surprise when I realised that the writer (Chip Zdarsky) was also the writer of the recent Howard the Duck series from Marvel! (Ditto). The stories are also very entertaining, and there is an ongoing plot that runs the length of the book. Whet little I remember of Jughead usually involves him pontificating and gesticulating angrily, and he does a lot of that here, as well as spending at least one chapter of most issues unconscious and hallucinating adventures including being in a team of superheroes (with Archie, Betty & co.), and being an agent of an acronymous super-spy organisation.Chip and Erica have recaptured the golden age of Archie Comics, brought their modern skills to bear, and given us a New Age of Archie for those kids who may or may not have read the original Archie Comics, and who are now adults (but have avoided becoming Grown Ups).
