Thorough and thoughtful.
There are numerous books on Picasso's life and work, too few of which I can own to having read. Tomothy Hilton's book is clearly well-informed and often percipient. I don't think it is a great intoduction to the artist since it never seems to me to capture the really special qualities that raise Picasso above his contemporaries and make him such a towering and deeply influential figure. It is a pity that there are not more and larger illustrations. However, Hilton takes us through the artist's development with clarity. Overall I found the book rather dull, but perhaps I am expecting too much.

A good book for the serios art student
This is a good book but didn't have the number of illustrations that I would have liked to see. great on the history of the great man. So buy it and lean, but, you will need to add another book if what you are wanting is to see a broad range of the master's work.

Picasso for art historians
I purchased this book following using a copy as background reading from the university library, as recommended, for a course on Art history I was completing at Leicester University. This is a very imformative and historical account of Picasso's life which is sufficiently comprehesive for anyone enrolled on a degree in Art History or for the person wanting to know more about Picasso. Hilton offers good insight into many of the often confusing works of Picasso with clearly defined emotive influences and reasons behind the works.
