Chiefs Mint Scent Shaving Cream with Brush and Straight Razor for Men, 4 Ounce

Bought it cause of the excellent reviews and wasn't disappointed! Good stuff. Just a note from my experience though: this isn't great shaving cream if you like to use a brush. You need very little to get a lather. Using a brush only wastes some of the product. It's very thin (not a bad thing because it won't clog your razor and it's just as effective as thicker creams) so the brush doesn't really work.

I'm one of those weirdos who really enjoys shaving. I use a double-edged safety razor (an old Superspeed with Feather blades if it matters) and typically only go for one pass with the grain as my facial hair isn't at all thick. I've now shaven about ten times with this using various techniques: lathered straight on my face as advertised (which I don't recommend), lathered in my hand then put on my face, on a brush and straight onto my face, lathered with the brush in my hand, and the full-on heated scuttle five-minute lather with pre-shave soak experience. I've used a small amount and a huge glob. I've done the same with many other creams trying to find the perfect fit for my face (Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood remains the best but for the nauseatingly overpowering smell). I wouldn't put this in the same league.I really wanted to like this more. The presentation is great, the smell is great (and, thankfully, subtle), but no matter how thick you put it on, it's simply too thin to shave with. I'm guessing the formula uses very little thick lubricant--finding all the ingredients past the advertised smell and "energizing" components has proven difficult--and it seems to be light on the lauryl sulfate. Half of it runs down my neck and I might as well be using water for the second half my shave. You're better off getting a can of Edge or Barbasol from your local supermarket at 1/5 the price. So, it gets three stars because everything except the lubrication is fantastic, but you can do far if you're more interested in a good shave than a fancy one.

Updated review 2/27/16This was my absolutely favorite shaving cream, it went on perfectly, nice and slick and barely had to use much at all. The last time I ordered it, the packaging was different, I had to completely remove the label because it was wrapped around the top of the lid (maybe a safety thing, but if so, use a label that will tear!)Then I immediately noticed it was not the same texture as it used to be, it was much more almost a gel texture, rather than it used to be more light and airy. Upon use, it was not as nice, it went on almost like a thin soap, it didn't even last very well on my face and made me need to use far more of the product than I had on my previous batches, and even then it didn't make for a very good shave.I sent an email to the company and they confirmed that they are using a new formula. Well, I politely informed them that their old formula was the best shave I had ever had and that their new formula was not very good and they were losing at least one customer. Maybe more...Judge for yourself, it used to be incredible, but now I would rather use Gillette than the last product I received last month. Maybe if others agree, they will go back to the old formula!------------------------------------------------------------------------I absolutely love this stuff! It goes on nice, I love the smell and it is very slick. It feels like the razor glides through it, but it isn't slimy at all. I also feel like you don't need to use very much of it at all, the jar last me far longer than I thought it was going to. I feel like my blades last much longer with it as well, and it definitely doesn't clog up the blades.I don't use a brush with it and don't think it really needs it. It doesn't "lather up" like some do with a brush, but it works great without it. I haven't yet tried it with my straight razor (i'm still learning how to use it!) but it feels like it is exactly what I'd want to use with it, it is nice a slippery, but not at all slimy (if that makes sense to anyone!).

The first thing I noticed about this product was how much I liked the smell. The second thing I noticed was how POORLY it lathered. No matter how much I put on the brush, it just wouldn't lather! The third thing I noticed, once I stopped trying to apply it with a brush and started applying it with my fingers, was how well it actually worked. Additionally, it's got some kind of lotion built into it that doesn't rinse off which leaves my face feeling moisturized all day. As long as you're okay with it not lathering, a little goes a long way, which is a really good thing because this stuff is expensive. It costs almost twice as much as the high end brands (Taylor of Old Bond Street, Art of Shaving, Geo F. Trumper etc.) or about 5 to 10 times as what you can find in your local drugstore.
