Chinua Achebe's novel is conceived as a tragedy in the ...
Chinua Achebe's novel is conceived as a tragedy in the classic form: a powerful man is destroyed due to a fatal flaw in his character. In the case of the novel's protagonist, Okonkwo, the hero offends against female deities and, because he does not wish to be perceived as "womanish," behaves in a cruel fashion -- these defects in his character isolate him from the community and, ultimately, result in his doom. Achebe's novel also recounts the effects of Christianity on the tribal village that is Okonwko's home. This aspect of the novel is incidental to its tragic theme and not completely integrated into the narrative -- it seems an afterthought. However, Achebe's portrait of a culture changing under the influence of European ideas, and, particularly, Christian missionaries is nuanced, judicious, and surprisingly evenhanded.

This was a very good read. I will have to read it again
This was a very good read. I will have to read it again. I appreciate the author so much. I remember connecting the story to so many cool things in life. I'll have to see how those things connect later as well or if there is more to see!

This has to be the worlds most boring books. It was needed for my class though so I can't really complain.

Educational
Definitely my favorite read of the semester! I loved the articles I was able to pull from included in the back. The book is only about a fourth of the length as the actual text while the rest of the text is literary analysis of Achebe. Loved that I didn't have to Google random stuff to try and find something to write on.

Got a different book
I bought this for my English class last semester. This has the cover art and ISB code that my teacher wanted, however I got an entirely different book! No harm done, it was still the story Things Fall Apart, but it was just the novel with no connections or interview in the back. The book I got was even hard cover, not paperback. I don't know what went on there. I did not read much into it anyway, but my teacher had to print out the interview with the author for me because the book I received did not have it. No clue why I didn't get what I paid for, but like I said no harm done.
