Out of character for Brunton
In spite of a taped torn box and the black compass ring separated and taped in place with three broken tabs, I was able to assemble the compass and wanted it to work out. I found that both compass degree scales are difficult to read, in spite of the magnifier. The lume dots on the housing and needle do work well. The absence of compass points (N, NW, etc.) is a major drawback for many applications, especially given that the numberical scale is so difficult to read; making this compass nearly useless. The lanyard attaches midway and not at the rear, so the lanyard is in the way if it is around your neck. Given how poor this compass is I thought it would be useful for measuring that things are vertical given it has the balance bubble and an angle calibrated cover hinge. I saw that setting it to 90 degrees is definately not a right angle so I got a T square and measued it. The compass cover / body angle read about 82 degrees for a known 90 degree angle, which is visibly far off. The ring lume is very bright and long lasting which can be useful. The compass needle dot lume does not last as long as the scale ring lume but is functional. On top of all that, the build quality is very poor. This product is far below the quality of the Brunton transits. In my mind, it is definitely not a professional product.
