The author gives a detailed look at the life of Capablanca!
So many books of the games of Capablanca, with detailed analysis have been written, so the author goes another route; he gives us a detailed look at the life of & surrounding Capablanca. There are games in the book, however, the book reads like a novel! I put it down only when I had to. There are countless dart marks on pages that I want to do my own work on. Kudos to Mr. Winter!

Fascinating book spoiled by poor typesetting choices.
There are many good parts to this book. Winter is a great historian. Chess fans are fortunate to have his scholarship. Also, Capablanca was one of the greatest of all time, but there are very few good books about him available in algebraic notation.Unfortunately, the typesetting of the paper text is terrible. The text is hard to read, and the moves in the games are hard to follow.I hope a future edition will fix these problems.

Tiny print
I’m afraid I can’t attest to the quality of this book as I am unable to read it as the print is headachingly small. Not what I’d expect in a £30+ paperback; not what I’d expect from a prestigious publisher. Returned unread. Time wasted. 😩

A must have for chess readers!
The book is heavy in history and light in chess. The history is interesting however. The photographs are captivating. A weak spot is that the games are not annotated enough for a book on a chess legend and Winter states upfront that you need to have a companion volume like Golombek's if you are interested in the games(!), that's why a star has been deducted.Over all a must-have for all interested in chess history and an absolute must-read for Capablanca's fans.
